Experts investigate Galapagos' Volcanoes

A delegation from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will carry out a monitoring mission in the Galapagos Islands as part of the recommendations made by UNESCO at the 40th World Heritage Committee meeting.

The IUCN mission will be held until August 25, and will focus mainly on the review of three issues: invasive species, tourism development and governance in the Galapagos Islands, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In addition, land and marine field visits will be carried out to verify the actions of Ecuador to protect the archipelago. It was also emphasized the need for timely cooperation, especially for IUCN as the largest environmental network in the world, taking into account the latest developments in illegal fishing of vulnerable and highly migratory species in the Galapagos Marine Reserve (RMG).

The Galapagos Islands are also part of the Marine Sanctuary located between the Darwin and Wolf islands, within the marine reserve, the second largest in the world, characterized by the largest shark biomass on the planet.
