The Galapagos Islands were part of the initiative “Action for the planet” which aimed to clean its beaches.
In the insular region, about 876 volunteers, residents and tourists, were divided into the islands Floreana, Isabela, San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz, which collected about 4,353.4 kilograms of waste in 119 kilometers of coast of 46 sites.
These wastes were classified and weighed, and then transferred to the ecycling centers and corresponding landfills.
For underwater cleaning, a special group was held in the three Galapagos cantons (San Cristóbal, Isabela and Santa Cruz). These wastes needed differential treatment because they expel different materials that are not environmentally friendly.
Another of the activities carried out was the development of a mural with the motto “+ Vida – Basura”, headed by the Management of the Galapagos National Park, with the support of WildAid.
In total there were 317 points (beaches, rivers, lakes, lagoons, seabed) of waste collection at the national level, where about 39,000 volunteers participated and accumulated 182,389 kg of waste.
This initiative was led by the Ministry of the Environment.
