The possible finding of a new endemic snail species and the reproduction and survival of land tortoises in Pinzon Island are some of the results obtained with the application of the Pinzon project, executed since 2012 by the Galapagos National Park, with the support of The Island Conservation and The Raptor Center.
Before the project, the eggs of land turtles could not hatch, and the hatchlings didn’t survive because of the presence of black rats. However, this invasive species was eradicated through the application of a specific control for rodents in 1,789 hectares, located west of Santa Cruz.
In 2015, during a population survey of giant tortoises in Pinzon Island, the park rangers of the Galapagos National Park showed several turtles born in a natural state after 150 years, according to scientific studies carried out in the place. This event became a favorable indicator of ecological restoration in the island.
“This is one of the most important studies that have been carried out in Galapagos. Generations of efforts have been reversed and today we can see the results. We have an island in a speedy recovery process”
